65% of all underground utilities are considered “private” – and not marked by 811.
The law requires you to call 811 and have your utilities marked before you dig. But did you know that doesn’t give you complete protection?
State One Calls (811) partner with utility owners to mark their “public” utilities from the “main to the meter.” Anything beyond the meter – like supply lines to a facility or underground storage tanks, remain unmarked unless Private Utility Locates are performed.
Private Utility Locating requires different training and equipment to detect and mark all underground utilities and structures, present.
Commercial sites are a hot bed of private utilities:
- Shopping Centers, hospitals, gas stations, campuses, multifamily housing and business complexes are just a few examples.
Visual Indicators of Private Utilities on your site include:
- Parking lot lights, fire protection systems, power generators, gas pumps or air compressor systems, security systems and irrigation systems.
